Alan Bates, born in 1934, was an actor who won a scholarship to RADA, studying with Albert Finney and Peter O’Toole. He made his name during the 1960s in what became known as “kitchen sink” dramas. These included “ A kind of Loving” and “Women in Love “ (1969) directed by Ken Russell, in which he appeared with Oliver Reed and Glenda Jackson. “Look back in Anger” made him a star and he was awarded the CBE in 1996. He received a knighthood in 2003.
He lived for a time at 122 Hamilton Terrace, a few houses north of St Mark’s Church.
