MIchael Salmon was chairman of the St John’s Wood Society from 1992 to 2001.
Born in London in 1929, Michael was the son of Barnett Salmon, a descendant of one of the four original founders of J.Lyons & Co. The company was established in 1885 and from modest beginnings as a catering supplier it went on to become at its height the largest food company in Europe.
By the end of the 1960s the business was in decline and Michael reinvented himself with a successful career on the stock exchange. From 1993 to 2009 he chaired the St Marylebone Almshouses. He contributed enormously to the St John’s Wood Society, ensuring that the beauty and heritage of the area were preserved and that the community was well supported. In 1992 he succeeded Major General Sir Digby Raeburn as Chairman.
From then until he stepped down in 2001 he was deeply Involved in all matters involving the Society and his contacts in the community were an invaluable asset.
Michael died in June 2019, aged 90. He is survived by his wife Jill.
