In 1971, my last year at Barrow Hill, a group of us got to go on an educational cruise around the Baltic Sea on the SS Nevasa. This was part funded by the council, a fabulous opportunity for kids like me, whose parents could never have afforded this otherwise. I had never been abroad. We visited Kiel in northern Germany, then communist Poland; Copenhagen , featuring a trip to Tivoli Gardens, then Kristiansand on the southern tip of Norway, where I saw mountains for the first time, and we rode on a steam train. The whole cruise was an experience I will never forget, for all the right reasons. There is a Facebook group called SS Uganda and SS Nevasa, where people share their memories and photos of these trips.
