Schools visit the Cartoon Museum

A museum trail for the permanent collection of historical caricatures and contemporary political cartoons, and for the temporary exhibition on the history of comic strips structured this session. Three classes visited over two days, in one-hour or one-and-a-half-hour sessions, depending on the class schedule for the day. The museum trail for the permanent exhibition was devised by the project officer and focused on five cartoons in the collection asking the following main questions: (1) what do you know about this cartoon?, (2) what do you observe, and (3) what is the joke? These were addressed in a open discussion of each print, inviting the children to lead the interpretation and emphasising the fact that the meaning of a visual work was dependent not only on the artist, but also on the quality of the depiction, and the understanding of opinions of the viewer as well.
