Townshend Cottages Silver Jubilee and Coronation parties

Harry Robertson

I lived at 5 Townshend Cottages from 1929 to 1938, with my parents and sister, and my grandparents Jim and Elizabeth Washington. These photographs show Jubilee and Coronation street parties. I have some pictures of Barrow Hill Road which I will upload later.

  • Hi Ken

My Uncle was called Freddie Bassett and his wife was Rose they live opposite us in Pettie House on Townshend Estate. I moved there from Carlton Hill with my Mum Clara and Dad Reg Bassett and my sisters Ann and Pat in 1959; they previously lived in Townshend Cottages. The Bassett’s were quite a big family living there in that time. Fred had a son called Dinko (nickname I think) and a daughter  I cannot remember her name I was born in 1954 so I am now 60 but they were quite a bit older than me. My other Uncle George Bassett lived in Eamont Court he had a son called Archie and a daughter but I did not know her either.

My Mum’s family name was Thompson and before that her Mother’s name was Sangster. I did not see this post because I do not log into the site very often I will try to more often so please let me know if we are the family that you knew.

    Janet

  • My father’s family lived in Townshend Cottages until they were demolished after the Second World War. Their name was Bassett. My mother’s family were living in Frederick Street (now McKennel Street) when she was born. Their name was Thompson. Her mother’s family were Sangsters. Both sides of the families came up from the West Country, in approximately 1860’s to live in St John’s Wood. My parents lived in St John’s Wood all their lives, when first married in the cottages with my father’s family then in Charles Lane, and then Carlton Hill (where I was born), finally, coming to live in Townshend Estate, on the land of where the Townshend Cottages once were in 1959, until their deaths in 1984, and 2005. My sister, daughter and I, all live in flats there until this day.

  • I was born in the stables at the bottom of Townsend cottages. Ilived in 88 St Johns Wood Terrace from 1942 till 1951 and then moved to Cochrane Street. My dad worked at Jordans green grocers in Charlbert Street and I went to Barrow Hill School.

  • Lovely photos! Sad many of the old places no longer exist. My ancestors lived in Portland Cottages and somewhere called Oak Tree Mews. I’m talking about the 1830s/40s.

  • Harry, it is good to hear from you. It has taken us a while to get back to you, as we were not sure how you came to add the photos! Normally they go through one of our editors. We are always glad to learn more about our area and I am pleased that you may have more photos to upload. In the meantime I would like to know more about these – what is your email address?
